A tooth ache is a pain you experience in and around the teeth and the jaws.
There can be several reasons for tooth pain, some of which are tooth decay, broken or fractured tooth or filling, infection, eruption or impaction of wisdom tooth etc...
A toothache can be a frustrating and obnoxious experience, so it’s important to figure out what is the root cause of this discomfort. If the pain lasts for one than one or two days, it is best to visit a dentist to determine and eradicate the problem.
In the meantime, you can use some of the home remedies which are listed below that might provide you a temporary relief until there is a dentist’s intervention.
Here are a few home remedies to try out:
Salt Water Rinse:
Salt water rinse is one of the best remedy you can do to reduce the pain. It helps to loosen the food particles and debris that might be stuck in between your teeth. It can also help to reduce inflammation and swelling of gums to a little extent.
You can do this by heating a cup of water and dissolving a spoon of salt into it. Swish this lukewarm liquid around in the mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting out, do not swallow. This process can be repeated as often as needed.
Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse:
As an alternative to salt water rinse you can also use hydrogen peroxide rinse. To make this solution, mix equal parts of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water. Use it as mouthwash for 30 seconds.
Hydrogen peroxide acts as an effective antibacterial mouthwash. But it is dangerous to swallow, so great care must be taken while rinsing. This remedy is not recommended for children.
Cold Compress or Ice Pack:
A cold compress can help ease your tooth ache and swelling especially if it due to any type trauma.
You can try holding the ice pack against the affected area at a time for few minutes. You can repeat this every few hours.
Cloves:
Cloves have anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties, which can help reduce tooth and gum infection and pain.
Gently chew a whole dried clove and hold it in place against the affected area. Alternatively you can also add a drop of clove oil to a small glass of water and make it a mouthwash.
Over The Counter Painkillers:
Over the counter medications can provide temporary pain relief for toothache until you visit a dentist.
Garlic:
Garlic has been widely used for a long time now for its medicinal benefits and antibacterial properties. It can kill plaque causing bacteria and provide relief from pain.
Chew on a piece of raw garlic or apply crushed raw garlic in the affected area to relieve pain and swelling.
In addition to these you can also use:
- Peppermint tea
- Vanilla extract
- Thyme
- Ginger
Important Note:
All these home remedies provide temporary relief only and there is not much research done regarding these remedies. If the pain lasts for more than one or two days, we strongly recommend you to visit a dentist who will give you exact idea about what is the problem and its solution.
