Gen X uses digital network for positive social change

12 August, 2018

Thane : From voicing their opinions through an array of political limericks or crafting poetries on stereotypes existing in our society and highlighting key social issues with the help of social media platforms, the Gen X seems to be making the most of the digital network.

On the occasion of International Youth Day, the theme of which this year is - safe spaces for the youth, TOI speaks to youngsters, who are using mediums like Instagram, Facebook, etc. in an attempt to bring about a positive social change.

Twenty-one-year-old Keya Shah, a resident, said, “The poetry on social media is so raw and current unlike what it used to be earlier. This channel can be used as a medium to influence others. I prefer to upload my poems on my Instagram account so I can reach out to a wider audience. I mostly write about issues that I am passionate about like self-love, women empowerment and topics, which are not spoken about openly. I also love writing narratives that are motivational.”

While some taking a spin on the traditional medium of poetry upload it on the new media, a few others also write crisp online posts inviting debates and discussions from people all across the globe.

Anisha Nair, a 22-year-old resident of Ghodbundar Road, said, “A whole new audience out there is waiting to review our work, comment and criticize it. This not only opens conversation among strangers, but also results in a wider perception of things. I have joined a group on Facebook wherein 20-odd members come together once a week and voice out their opinions over a current issue or some other trending topic like cyberbullying, peer pressure, body shaming, etc.”
