THANE: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has proposed to construct a full-flegded fire station at Kalwa to ensure timely response to any emergency reported in the densely populated suburb and neighbouring localties of Parsik and Kharegaon.

According to the plan, the facility spanning over 16,000sq ft is likely to come up on a reserved plot in Khare village and will cater to all emergencies reported in this part of the suburb. Presently, all emergencies are tackled by the Jawhar Baugh fire station in Thane and often there is a considerable delay in response time to facilities at Kalwa and Parsik.

A review of the requirement of fire stations was done by the fire fighting department recently following the proposal of setting up the station here was finalised. An official from the directorate of the Maharashtra fire services said that as per the standard advisory council criteria having a fire fighting station for every population of 50,000 is mandatory. The city presently requires 14 fire stations but has just seven operational while the work on constructing the rest is under planning process or execution, said officials.

Accordingly, the civic body has drafted a Rs 5.40 crore proposal to construct the fire station that will comprise of a ground plus two storeyed building. The ground floor will have a porch for parking four fire fighters and quick response vehicles, control room while the upper storeys will have administrative offices along with restrooms for the staff. A recreation area and ground for conducting daily drills will also be made available at the facility.

A proposal has been put up for approval of the TMC general body that will meet late this week. Once the approval is sought, the tenders for the project will be floated and ensured the work is taken up for execution, said officials.

“The suburbs of Kalwa needed a proper fire fighting facility since a very long time. Presently, if there is any emergency, then the vehicles have to rush from Thane which often delays the rescue process. There are many highrises here which require hi-tech facilities too. Constructing the facility right here in Parsik will reduce the response time and ensure timely rescue during emergencies,” said a resident.
