As most families will start preparing traditional Sankrant special sweets in their homes over the next fortnight, they have already begun stocking up on the ingredients for these delicacies.

“While the main sweet made during Makar Sankranti is the jaggery and sesame seed laddoos called til guls, we make other sweets using these ingredients as well as other heat inducing ones like dink, sooth etc,” said Waghbil resident Sangita Sukhi.

“I have started stocking up on these ingredients and have also purchased some special spice mixes from Gujarat to add a special element this year. I'll keep trying different recipes over the next two weeks and prepare the best ones for Sankrant,” she added.

Some denizens have also begun attending sweet making classes to try their hand at these winter special delicacies.

Anagha Pendse, one such Khopat resident, said, “Every year we make the traditional til guls for Sankrant and while I love making those, I wanted to learn some new sweet recipes as well. So in addition to experimenting with some new Chikki and laddoo recipes, I have joined a class to learn Sankrant sweets from other communities including puli pithas, patishaptas, gulab paak and Rajasthani gajaks.”

City chefs whose phones have been buzzing since last month have arranged for a string of sessions to meet this rising demand.

“The demand to learn traditional as well as unique dishes came in full swing as the festival is approaching. Interestingly, I have received numerous requests for sugar-free, healthy and ven vegan sweets. So I am preparing some recipes to meet these demands by using the various dry fruits available during this season and will be arranging Sankrant special classes in the coming week,” said Priti Doke, a city-based chef.
