Netas worried by rising Covid-19 cases in Thane

THANE: The rising tally of Covid-19 patients in Thane has drawn the attention of the standing committee here that has now raised serious concerns at the apparent failure of the administration to chalk out remedial measures in the last two months to keep the Virus cases in check

The issue dominated the meeting that was held recently as corporators highlighted how rules were changed at the last minute, fleecing by private facilities that allegedly kept overcharging patients among others. Lack of space in hospitals and inadequate ambulances were some of the major issues that impacted the citizens the most which was also discussed.

“The number of corona cases in Thane has been rising rapidly. We questioned the lack of a proper policy for handling the situation here even though the administration had enough time in its hand. The corporation seems to have not just failed to frame a proper policy in time but also failed to come up with stern implementation of lockdown including shutting down of zones, relocation of markets,” said Shiv sena corporator Sanjay Bhoir

NCP’s senior corporator Hanumant Jagdale from the Lokmanya-Sawarkar Nagar ward said the corporation abrupt rules often ended up causing more problems than easing the situation.

“There have been instances where the TMC tried to replicate the guidelines without studying the local conditions. For example, asymptomatic patients, especially those from slum areas, were also asked to stay home citing the revised ICMR guidelines but allowing this could have led to further spike in transmission and so we opposed it. The corporation didn’t take any of the elected representatives into consideration before chalking out plans,” complained Jagdale.

The administration, meanwhile, denied there was any lapse and added they were working on improving the situation by forming committees on ward level.
