The first phase of the personal rapid transport system (PRTS) will soon be implemented in Thane and Mumbra and the routes and locations of the stations will be finalized by next month, said officials. The PRTS will run on feeder routes of the Metro IV and city Metro.

The PRTS will be an elevated mode of fast travel with small pod cars operating on monorails carrying a maximum of six passengers at one stretch. The air-cooled pods will run point to point at a speed of around 40kmph. Stations will be developed at designated spots in the city wherein passengers can embark or alight facility. The project, said city engineer at Thane Corporation Anil Patil, will approximately cost Rs 3000 crore. While the total stretch of the PRTS will be over 50km, the first phase of 30km will be developed connecting interior parts of the city in coordination with the intra-city and Metro IV stations. While a tentative route of the PRTS was discussed, including Panchpakhadi and Wagle Estate, officials said a final route will be confirmed after a few days, following a feasibility survey.

The PRTS will greatly help in connecting the city interiors with the Metro lines, ruling out the need of using private vehicles or autos for short distances within Thane. “The routes of will be known at the next meeting,” said an official.
