5 New Weather Stations inaugurated on World Environment Day

06th June, 2018

THANE: Six weather monitoring stations were inaugurated in the city by civic chief Sanjeev Jaiswal on Tuesday on the occasion of World Environment Day. The stations, linked to a mobile application, will enable citizens to gauge the actual temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed and wind direction in their areas and plan their schedules accordingly.

While the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) had only one such weather monitoring station at the civic headquarters at Pachpakhani till date, they it now has five new ones spread across various areas — Rayladevi ward office, Vitava school no. 72, Mumbra fire station, Diva ward office and Kashinath Ghanekar Natyagruha.

“The city is extremely vast and the rainfall and temperature recorded in one area such as Yeoor is not applicable for another region near the creek. Until now the weather was only monitored at the headquarters in Pachpakhadi and this information was not applicable for areas further away, including the Ghodbunder Road or Mumbra and Kalwa areas,” said Manisha Pradhan, civic pollution control officer.

“To solve this issue of irregular weather monitoring, we set up five new weather stations across the city. These stations, in addition to the pre-existing one at the TMC office, will be linked to the weatherlink2.0 mobile application and the data will be updated every 15 minutes. This will not only help citizens get a real-time location specific weather update, but will also help in avoid stepping out in flood-like situations,” added Pradhan.

The TMC has allocated a budget of Rs.25 lakhs for the set up and three year maintenance of the technology.

Citizen activist Sashikumar Nair said, “This is a good initiative that will help each of us get crucial information about the weather in our vicinity. It will help us take necessary precautions thereafter. However, in addition to the application, the TMC could also send citizens SMS alerts in case of predictions of flash flood or heavy rain, heat waves, etc.” —Freny Fernandes
