Thane : Gatari Feasting Starts Early This Year

06 August, 2018

Thane : Although the holy month of Shravan is set to kick off from next Sunday and Gatari Amavasya is to be observed on Saturday, Maharashtrian families across the lake city seem to have begun celebrations a week early this time.

Revellers have started taking part in the tradition of binge drinking and feasting on non-vegetarian food almost six days early as many do not consume meat on Saturdays and some of the weekdays.

"We had a grand party at home on Saturday and indulged in an array of non-vegetarian starters and other delicacies. We had called our near and dear ones and partied till late into the night. Since we will bring home Ganpati in the coming month, we abstain from consuming liquor and non-veg food: said Aditya Deshpande, a resident of Panchpakhadi.

A few youngsters were seen visiting pubs and resto-bars across the city, taking full advantage of the last weekend before Shravan.

Devraj Shenoy (29), a resident of Naupada said, "My friends and I were on a pub hopping spree on Sunday and visited many places in Mumbai. My family is religious and follows Shravan strictly, conducting the fast and pujas every day. It has been left up to me if I want to follow the rituals."
