Water conservation, housing for poor priority, says new collector

Thane : Senior bureaucrat Rajesh Narvekar, who took over as the new collector of Thane district on Tuesday, said that housing for the economically weaker section and water conservation will top his agenda.
The IAS officer from the 2009 batch was working as the joint secretary in the chief minister's office and had played a key role in preparing the development plan of Mumbai and also worked on finalising the policy plan for the Delhi Mumbai Freight Corridor while serving with the MIDC. He is also credited to have launched several e-initiatives during his stint in the revenue department and also given good results to cleanliness drives as the CEO of the Raigad Zilla Parishad.
"Thane is special to me as I have completed my education in this city. My focus will be on effective implementation of various projects like the Jalyukta Shivaar and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana among others," said Narvekar, who has a challenge ahead in managing finances for the district and also the two crucial elections scheduled next year.
Outgoing collector Mahendra Kalyanakar has been posted as joint secretary in the state labour department.
Meanwhile, Rajendra Ahiwar has taken over as the additional municipal commissioner-1 at the Thane Municipal Corporation in place of Sunil Chavan, who has been posted as the Ratnagiri district collector.
