Nightmare On Ghodbunder Road: Metro Work, Dug Up Service Lanes
29 January, 2019
THANE: Travel on an 8-km stretch on Ghodbunder Road, especially during peak hours, has become a headache for motorists, thanks to the stretch being dug up for Metro work. Also service roads, which are already blocked by illegally parked vehicles too have been dug up by civic works.
Barricades for the Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavli Metro 4 have taken over more than an entire lane, leaving just twoand-a half lanes for vehicles to ply on the two carriageways, resulting in daily traffic jams in both directions—from Majiwada towards Kasarvadavli and from Borivli towards Ghodbunder. “It takes almost an hour to cover 4km in a bus. And trucks add to the congestion,” said Roshan Rai, a resident.
At times, the traffic jam extends up to Gaimukh and even till Versova bridge, complained motorists, adding that they cannot use service roads as most of them are in a bad condition. “Almost all service roads on this stretch are in a bad state and the rest cannot be accessed as Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has dug them up to lay drainage and water pipelines,” said Pracheta Mada, a local resident. Arjun Ahire, head of the civic water department, said they will take at last three months to complete the pipeline-laying work.
Traffic authorities said they have deployed their men along the route to manage traffic and direct motorists to use internal roads in case of a severe jam.
