In Thane, you can dial helpline for rickshaws

If you need an auto-rickshaw for medical or any other emergency, don’t worry – 25 women drivers are ready to serve you. With the approval of the district magistrate, a helpline number has been issued by for rickshaw-on-demand in Thane city.

The helpline number – 9967312176 – is manged by rickshaw union leader Vinaysk Surve. This service is available between 10 am and 5 pm daily. According to Surve, the women drivers are attending to more than 300 calls every day. However, during night the service is scaled down, and male drivers are arranged for people needing auto-rickshaws. “In any case, we get fewer calls during night time,” he said.

Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation has also prepared a group of 25 rickshaw drivers to help people in emergency situations.

“With the consent of the deputy regional transport officer, Kalyan, deputy commissioner of police (circle 3), KDMC arranged a group of 25 rickshaw drivers to provide transport service to the residents of Kalyan and Dombivali in the municipal area ,” said a KDMC officer. “This rickshaw service is available 24x7,” said the official.

Auto-rickshaws, taxis to help in emergency services in Mumbai

In Mumbai, the RTOs have asked the autos and taxis to be ready to ply as emergency services. The transport department has informed the unions to keep vehicles on standby. These vehicles will be apart from the private buses and cars that are plying on an emergency basis. The main task of these vehicles is to ferry people on emergency duty.

This comes at a time when the burden of ferrying people has fallen on the BEST and the MSRTC. “We have asked the taxis and auto drivers to be ready for ferrying them for emergency duty. We have asked them to obtain emergency vehicle certificate for the same,” said a RTO official.

“Around 25 cabs have been asked by the RTOs to be ready for emergency duties,” said AL Quadros, a taxi union leader.

The RTOs have deputed two officers in every BMC ward and four officers at the collector’s office for coordinating the need for assembling emergency vehicles. “These autorickshaws and taxis can ply, but on the condition that an auto-rickshaw will carry only one person and taxis will carry two persons in passenger seats,” said Shekhar Channe, transport commissioner.

Special permits for carrying essential commodities

The Maharashtra government has announced to give special permits to vehicles carrying essential supplies such as food grains, vegetables, fruits, milk and medicines.

The vehicle owners will have to apply on the website covid19.mhpolice.in, and upload their documents on it. After filling the form, the vehicle owners will be given token numbers and after scrutiny of their documents, they will be issued these special permits. The permits will be valid for three months.

The vehicle driver will have to carry both soft and hard copy of the special permit while transporting essential supplies.
