May 28, 2020

THANE: A shutdown has been imposed in the whole of Thane city from Thursday in a bid to contain the number of positive cases. . On Wednesday, the cases rose by 156, including two corporators, to touch 2,450. Three patients — including a 76-year-old woman and two 60-year-old men — died, taking the toll to 72.

TMC chief Vijay Singhal said the plan was to ensure heightened containment zone monitoring that is likely to have an impact. Additional municipal commissioner Ganesh Deshmukh said that while all wards have been shut down till May 31, they have empowered local officials to intensify or ease the shut down based on the situation in their wards.

Officials said the idea was to curtail movement of people within and beyond the civic wards and prevent transmission as numbers in certain wards were small. “Many residents including hawkers from hotspots were seen moving into adjoining wards, increasing possibility of contamination. So we sealed off wards till the month-end. Dairies and chemists will be open while groceries in select areas can operate for specific time besides essential services like medical facilities,” said Sandeep Malvi, deputy municipal commissioner.

Of the two netas found infected, one is a senior BJP corporator from Kopri. He has been shifted to a Mumbai Hospital . The other is an NCP corporator from Kalwa who has been admitted to a Thane hospital. His condition is stable, said his aides.

Companies of Rapid Action Force, SRPF has already deployed in Mumbra in addition to the local police. A police official said that the forces have been brought in to discipline citizens who have been violating lockdown orders.
