TCS Centralises City Operations into One Centre in Thane; to House 30,000 Employees

As part of consolidating its operations in the megapolis spread across multiple locations, largest software exporter Tata Consultancy ServicesBSE -1.10 % today launched a new campus at the suburban Thane that can house 30,000 people.

The Tata Group flagship said consolidation of operations across the megapolis into the over 2 million sqft new facility will also create more indirect employment opportunities in the Greater Mumbai area.

The new facility was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

"We're delighted to launch the new next-gen workplace, TCSBSE -1.10 % Olympus, which provides collaborative agile workspace, software-defined network, a security operations centre and a cloud-enabled infrastructure. This will help us further drive the next phase of growth," TCS chief executive and managing director Rajesh Gopinathan said.

He added that the firm currently employs around 75,000 people in Maharashtra across Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Nashik. The company did not specify how many people it employs in the city now, though.

"This facility, when fully operational over the next 12 months, will have over 30,000 associates," he said but did not disclose the investment gone into building the new facility.

TCS Olympus will be developed in two phases and 16,000-17,000 people have already moved into the new facility and it will commence exports from the centre from this month onwards.

Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran, present at the inauguration of the new facility, said ease of doing business in Mumbai and Maharashtra is very high and the group is committed to the state.

"We'll continue to make significant investments and transform the group into the new-age economy. We'll not only grow our existing businesses, but will also invest in a number of businesses in the latest technologies using advanced manufacturing, Internet offering, electric-vehicles etc.

"There are many opportunities and the Tata group will explore all these opportunities, " he said.
